UN chief calls for ‘immediate’ ceasefire in Gaza
“I reiterate my call, the call of the whole world for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire, for the unconditional release of all hostages and for an immediate increase in humanitarian aid”, once again insisted the Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres. He also calls for this truce not to be “just a beginning” : “It will be a long road to recovery from the devastation and trauma of this war.” he admitted, in his video speech broadcast during an international donor conference in Kuwait.
According to Biden, ceasefire is possible “tomorrow” if Hamas releases hostages
“There would be a ceasefire tomorrow if Hamas released the hostages”, said the American president on Saturday, during a fundraising reception near Seattle, at the home of a former Microsoft manager. He avoided the subject on Friday, under similar circumstances. This statement comes as Joe Biden shows more firmness towards his Israeli ally: after weeks of calls for restraint addressed more and more publicly to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, he threatened him on Wednesday to no longer supply the country certain types of ammunition if its soldiers entered Rafah. And deplored that civilians were killed by the dropping of American bombs.
Two doctors killed by Israeli strikes in the Gaza Strip
Hamas’s civil security services announced early this Sunday morning the death of two doctors during Israeli strikes on the town of Deir al-Balah, in the center of the Gaza Strip. “The bodies of Doctor Mohammed Nimr Qazat and his son, Doctor Youssef, were discovered (…) they were transferred to the al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital” of the city, they said.
The Israeli army continues its bombings on this territory, also in Rafah, threatened with a major ground offensive. The entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza has been virtually blocked according to the UN since Israeli troops entered the east of this southern city on Monday and took over the border crossing point with Egypt, locking an entry gate critical for convoys transporting vital aid to a population threatened with famine.
Operations in Jabalia and Gaza City
In the north of the Gaza Strip, the army also issued evacuation orders for Jabalia and Beit Lahia, and reported a “major operation” in the Zeitoun neighborhood of Gaza City. According to the same source, Hamas “try to rebuild” in several areas.
Israeli-British hostage shown alive in video is dead, Hamas says
He was featured in a video on Saturday May 11 by the armed wing of the Palestinian Islamist organization, and identified as Nadav Popplewell, a 51-year-old Israeli-British citizen from Kibbutz Nirim. The same evening, the Ezzedine al-Qassam brigades claimed in a video on Telegram that he was dead. They attributed his death to “injuries suffered after Zionist fighter planes (Israeli, editor’s note) targeted the place where he was detained more than a month ago.”
Shortly before, the armed group had released a first video. These images, lasting around ten seconds, and whose recording date is not specified, show the hostage, with a swollen eye and a haggard look, who articulates his name and his age. The message from Hamas’ military wing is accompanied by hashtags written in Arabic and Hebrew: “Hurry up” And “your government is lying”.
