The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) announced on Wednesday that it was suspending the next two days of Serie A, the local championship, due to flooding caused by the record rains which fell on Rio Grande do Sul ( in the south of the country, on the border with Uruguay and Argentina).
Meetings of three teams in the region (Gremio, Internacional and Juventude) had already been suspended before this decision which now concerns the entire country. The rains caused enormous damage in the region, including flooding of stadiums, training centers and airports.
No matches will therefore be played until May 27 and on this date, the technical council of the Brazilian First Division will meet to discuss the possibility of permanently suspending the competition. Finally, CONMEBOL also postponed the affected clubs’ Copa Libertadores and Sudamericana matches earlier this month due to flooding.
