For the first time in months, the city of Tel Aviv in Israel was targeted by Hamas rockets
MIDDLE EAST – It had been more than four months since the residents of Tel Aviv had experienced this stress. Warning sirens sounded this Sunday, May 26 in central Israel, ordering them to take shelter from rocket fire launched from the Gaza Strip.
“We bombarded Tel Aviv with a large barrage of rockets in response to the Zionist massacres against civilians”wrote the Ezzedine al-Qassam brigades, Hamas’ armed wing, in a statement.
According to the Israeli army, at least eight rockets were fired from Rafah. AFP journalists noted at least three explosions in the center of the country. Several rockets were intercepted by Israeli defense systems, according to IDF reports cited by Israeli media.
On X, the account of the French embassy in Israel calls on its nationals to exercise caution after this attack.
New bombings on Sunday
At the same time, the Israeli army carried out new bombings in the Gaza Strip on Sunday. Air strikes and artillery fire again targeted the north and center of the territory, as well as Rafah in the southern tip of the Gaza Strip from where hundreds of thousands of people have fled.
These Israeli strikes come after requests from the International Court of Justice ordering it to stop its military offensive “ and any other action carried out in the governorate of Rafah.” The Court, which sits in The Hague, also asked the Jewish state to facilitate the transfer of humanitarian aid to the Rafah crossing point on the border with Egypt.
They also come at a time when diplomatic efforts are intensifying with a view to resuming negotiations to achieve a truce in the Palestinian territory, associated with the release of hostages.
