This Tuesday, opponents of the nickel pact installed filter dams in La Foa, on the RT1, and in Saint-Louis, on the RP1. Summary of a day of tension during which two people were arrested for acts of violence against the police.
While elected representatives of Congress met once again around the nickel pact, this Tuesday, filter dams were installed at dawn in La Foa and Saint-Louis.
In La Foa, around sixty demonstrators took out banners, branches and tires at Fonwhary, at the intersection between RT1 and the road leading to Farino and Sarraméa. On banners, they demand the resignation of Louis Mapou, the president of the government, who, last week, said he was ready to sign the nickel pact with the State even if Congress did not grant him the authorization that he himself requested.
Another banner calls for Gilbert Tyuienon, member of the government in charge of taxation and mining affairs, to resign.
“If these old politicians are no longer capable of building, we demand their resignation. They want to sign the nickel pact. People believe in this pact but we have to dissect things carefully“, estimates Emile Slideshowparo holderthe of mobilization. Like the pro-independence groups in Congress, it takes time.
Opponents of the pact call out to motorists, tires and branches slow them down, but traffic has not been blocked.
The report by Caroline Antic-Martin and Claude Lindor:
It was more tense in Saint-Louis, where traffic was initially slowed down without any road cuts, according to the gendarmerie. Around 9:30 a.m., seven gendarmerie trucks headed towards Saint-Louis. In the process, the town of Mont-Dore announced that traffic had been interrupted at Thabor.
An hour later, once the roadway was clear of all obstacles, it resumed. Before closing almost immediately due to stones being thrown at vehicles, a response from the gendarmes with tear gas and gunshots heard from the tribe.
More than 100 gendarmes were mobilized during the day and traffic was prohibited and then authorized several times. The prosecution also announced the arrest of dthem people for acts of violence against the police in Mont-Dore. Investigations are underway into the stones.
On Friday, a 23-year-old man received a one-year prison sentence for similar offenses. The Mondorian Citizen association calls for calm.
The report by Angela Palmieri and Nicolas Fasquel:
Banners were also installed against the nickel pact on the Isle of Pines.
