In a video broadcast this Saturday on social networks, where he answers questions from Internet users about Europe, Emmanuel Macron is questioned in particular about the risk of France entering war. “No, we are not going to war and I want to reassure you here,” says the head of state, who believes he has “done everything” since coming to power “so that we have peace”.
“Being a peace power does not mean being weak,” he continued, calling the Russian invasion of Ukraine a “huge challenge” for the EU. “We must be able to dissuade Russia from continuing to advance, because in Ukraine the sovereignty and territorial integrity of this country are obviously at stake, but the rule of law is also at stake, that is- that is to say our common rules and if we let this happen in Ukraine, it is the law of the strongest and we cannot be safe.
“We are playing a lot with our future and our security in Ukraine,” the President of the Republic further argues. “That’s why I said: we must help more, which we will do in the coming weeks, deliver more equipment to the Ukrainians. But we must also say: at some point, if the Russians go too far, all of us Europeans must be ready to act to dissuade them (…) So no, I hope with all my strength that we will not have to go to war No, France. is not a war power but a peace power. But yes, if we want to have peace, we must protect it. That is why we must arm ourselves, we must be dissuasive and credible. sometimes towards our adversaries by telling them: ‘if you go too far and threaten my interests, my own security, then I do not rule out intervening’.”
