Several IDF tanks entered the center of Rafah, a town located in the south of the Gaza Strip, on Tuesday, May 28, according to the Reuters news agency. The tanks were seen near the Al-Awda Mosque, a central landmark in the locality, the witnesses said. The Israeli military did not immediately comment on the intervention, indicating that it would later issue a statement on the ongoing operation.
This Tuesday, Israel also increased strikes on Rafah. According to the Hamas health ministry, seven people died and six others were injured. This new attack comes two days after a deadly bombing against a displaced persons camp in Rafah sparking a wave of international condemnation.
This attack claimed by the Israeli army caused the death of 45 people and left more than 249 injured, according to the Ministry of Health in Gaza, and set fire to tents occupied by Palestinians in a displaced persons camp. The IDF initially recognized and justified the shooting, claiming to have targeted two Hamas commanders before, this Monday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke of a “tragic incident”. And indicates that a “investigation is underway”, against a backdrop of international diplomatic outcry.
