A tragedy occurred at the end of the day Thursday, in the tourist area of Playa de Palma (Balearic Islands, Spain) when “the roof of a two-story building” housing a restaurant collapsed. The latest report shows 4 dead and around twenty injured.
Four people died and around twenty others injured Thursday in the collapse of a restaurant located on the very tourist island of Mallorca, in the Spanish archipelago of the Balearic Islands, emergency services explained.
“There are four dead and 21 injured to varying degrees,” said a spokeswoman for the archipelago’s emergency services. People of “several nationalities” are among the victims, without being able to provide further details. Seven of the injured are in “very serious” condition and nine are in “serious” condition, the emergency services said in a message on X. “They were transferred to different hospitals in Palma”, the capital of island of Majorca.
“It was horrible,” a firefighter told the newspaper Última Hora, adding that when he arrived at the scene, he saw people crying and screaming around the rubble. The emergency services “continue to work on site” to check if any victims are not still trapped under the rubble, they said in a message published on the social network first aiders to work.
Causes of collapse still unknown
The causes of the collapse of this restaurant, located on Cartago Street in Playa de Palma, are currently unknown, but according to witnesses cited by local media, the roof collapsed on part of the first floor. The president of the Balearic Islands region, Marga Prohens, said she was “shocked by the information received about the collapse” and sent her thoughts “to the families of the four people who lost their lives in this tragic incident” .
The restaurant is located on the seafront, on an avenue with shops and leisure establishments. In 2009, the collapse of a three-story building in Palma de Mallorca killed seven people, including two Germans and three Colombians.
