An earthquake was felt by several Guadeloupeans this Wednesday morning. Its magnitude is estimated at 5.4 (+/-0.3) on the Richter scale.


The earth shook at 10:43 a.m. in Guadeloupe, this Wednesday, May 8, 2024. The tremor was strongly felt in several municipalities, including Baie-Mahault, Les Abymes and even Saint-Claude!

The seismic research center of the University of the West Indies (UWI Seismic Research Centre) locates the epicenter of this earthquake between North Grande-Terre and Antigua and Barbuda, i.e. 66 kilometers north of Pointe-à -Pitre (36 kilometers from Anse-Bertrand) and 44 kilometers southeast of Saint John’s; it was located at a depth of 17 kilometers.

The magnitude of the phenomenon was initially estimated at 5.4 on the Richter scale.
