In Chicago, a man stopped for wearing a seat belt allegedly fired at police, who responded with around 100 shots, killing the driver.
For a seat belt not being worn, a traffic stop ended in a profusion of shots in Chicago, United States. A police monitoring body released images this Tuesday, April 9, of a check carried out by three plainclothes officers which turned into a tragedy. The scene took place on March 21.
In the images from the on-board camera of one of the police officers, we can see an officer checking the driver of a white SUV with tinted windows. The tone quickly rises between the two men. “Unlock the door now.”, the policeman repeats several times. The 26-year-old man refuses. According to the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (the civilian oversight agency of the Chicago Police Department), the driver of the SUV opened fire on the officers, injuring one of them before fleeing.
Police immediately responded, firing 96 shots in 41 seconds. The driver of the vehicle died. An investigation is underway and the officers are suspended during the investigation.
