The House of Representatives in Arizona boos Republicans who do not want to debate the 1864 law on abortion, April 10, 2024.
UNITED STATES – The debate on abortion has continued to divide the United States. On Wednesday April 10, the Arizona Legislature plunged into chaos during a discussion about an 1864 law banning almost all abortions, which the courts found applicable a few days earlier.
Faced with the global uproar caused by this decision of the local Supreme Court, which criminalizes abortion except in cases of danger for the mother, the Democrats and at least one elected Republican wanted to open the discussion in order to cancel this law of 1864. At that time, Arizona was not even an incorporated state in the United States (it only became the 48th state in 1912).
But the Republican majority in the local House of Representatives was not of this opinion, says the agency Associated Press. She decided to cut short the discussions and adjourned the session for the week. The Democrats then shouted in anger: ” Shame on you ! “, as you can see in the videos below.
Doctors and clinics promise to continue
Republican Teresa Martinez said there was no reason to rush the debate when the Supreme Court’s decision had only been rendered 24 hours earlier. Then accused the Democrats of having ” calls out ” on the Republicans and for being “engaged in extremist and insurrectional actions in the House”.
“Taking healthy babies from their healthy mothers does not equate to care. Pregnancy is not an illness. This must be celebrated. Abortion ends lives », she said. Democrat Stephanie Stahl Hamilton said the court decision was ” extreme ” and “people are going to die” if this law is actually applied.
AP adds that at least three Republicans have spoken out against the law and in favor of overturning it because “this does not reflect the values of the majority of our electorate, regardless of electoral affiliation.” Doctors and clinics, for their part, have promised to remain open as long as possible.
