UNITED STATES – In California, they are part of everyday life. But on the East Coast, they are surprising. Tremors from a magnitude 4.7 earthquake were felt in the New York region this Friday, April 5. The geological phenomenon is rare in this part of the United States, much less prone to earthquakes than the west of the country.
The epicenter of the earthquake was in Lebanon, New Jersey, about 50 miles from New York, according to the American Institute of Geophysics (USGS). In the two neighboring states, many Americans were scared when the ground began to shake, as seen in the video at the top of the article.
In cafes and in private homes, surveillance cameras filmed the exact moment when the tremors took place, creating scenes of brief panic. Musician Jared Demel was filming himself playing guitar when his house in Bridgewater, New Jersey, was shaken.
A barber had the good instinct to put down his razor when the earthquake shook his business. He and his client couldn’t believe the shaking continued.
The earthquake was even filmed during a meeting at the United Nations headquarters in New York. The representative of the NGO Save the Children, Janti Soerip, had to interrupt her speech to the Security Council on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. âIs it an earthquake? », she asked. A speaker responded jokingly: âYouâre making the ground shake. »
The tremors only lasted a few seconds and everyone was able to return to their activities. No injuries were reported. More fear than harm.
