25 people were killed in a fire which broke out in the basement of a residential building in Istanbul.

25 people died and 3 were injured, including seven seriously on Tuesday, in a fire which broke out in the basement of a sixteen-story residential building in Istanbul, according to a new report from the governor’s office. “The number of people who lost their lives in the fire (in) the Gayrettepe district has now reached 25 deaths, and 3 people were injured, seven of them seriously”indicated the governorate in a press release announcing the opening of an investigation.

The fire broke out during work carried out in the basement of a 16-story residential building located in Gayrettepe, a district of the central Besiktas district, Istanbul Governor Davut Gül told journalists. A nightclub was located in the basement of the building, according to the newly reappointed mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem Imamoglu, who visited the site. “The fire has been brought under control. Let’s hope there are no more victims.” he clarified while presenting his “condolences” to the relatives of the victims.
