However, no tsunami alert was issued despite the intensity of the tremor.

An earthquake struck southern Japan on Wednesday April 17, the Japan Meteorological Agency announced. The magnitude of the tremor is estimated at 6.3 per the United States Geological Survey.

The epicenter of the earthquake was in the Bungo Strait which separates the Japanese islands of Kyushu and Shikoku, the agency said, adding that no tsunami warning had been issued. THE United States Geological Survey (USGS) said the epicenter was at a depth of about 25 kilometers.
